During my elementary school years, the Duncan yoyo was the ultimate coveted object. When I expressed this desire to my father, he didn't buy one. Instead, he mounted a piece of wood onto his tabletop drill press, improvising a lathe to "turn" two halves. He joined them with brass tubing, stained the wood, and attached a string. Suddenly, I had the only yoyo of its kind in the entire school. While it didn't seem unusual at the time, I now realize that watching him make that object shaped my understanding of the world and defined the kind of teacher I have become. This piece celebrates the skills I have acquired since then, while commemorating that defining moment in my childhood.
